Caroline Collins

University of Edinburgh

Caroline Collins (she/her) is a PhD student in the History of Christianity programme at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Divinity. Caroline has received her Master’s of Theological Studies (MTS) from Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Religion from Southwestern University. Her research interests include portrayals of the Devil in poetry and prose, and the intersection of religion, literature, and politics, of which her current thesis research reflects. Caroline’s doctoral thesis is on Dostoevsky’s portrayal of the Devil in The Brothers Karamazov, using a comparative literature approach with the libertine novels of The Marquis de Sade. She aims to illustrate the Devil as a key figure for Dostoevsky’s taking up of the nineteenth-century revolutionary movement, specifically its evolved strands of terrorism that aimed to assassinate the Tsar, in this novel.

Apart from being active in student life at the School of Divinity and holding a Tutor position, Caroline is also involved in organizations outside of the University of Edinburgh, such as the North American Research Collective - Religious Trauma.
