Harvard University

Joanna Burdzel is a Ph.D. candidate at the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Harvard University. In both her creative and academic work, she is interested in syncretic inner spiritualities. She studies both individual poetic systems and larger cultural phenomena in religious and esoteric movements of the 20th century. Her dissertation research encounters late and post soviet Polish and Russian culture, in an attempt to draw together a “constellation” of artistic gestures and methods —intentional, implicit, or imagined— to critically unravel a resilient mystical impulse in the artistic imagination.
